Caught in the Middle: America's Heartland in the Age of Globalization
with
Richard C. Longworth, senior fellow, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs; former senior foreign correspondent, Chicago Tribune
The program will be moderated by Rick Kogan, senior writer and columnist for the Chicago Tribune's Sunday magazine, and creator and host of The Sunday Papers with Rick Kogan on WGN-AM radio.
In Caught in the Middle, longtime Chicago Tribune reporter Richard Longworth explores the new reality of life in today’s heartland and reveals what these changes mean for the region—and the country. Ranging from the manufacturing collapse that has crippled the Midwest to the biofuels revolution that may save it, and from the school districts struggling with new migrants to the Iowa meatpacking town that can’t survive without them, Longworth addresses what’s right and what’s wrong in the region. He offers a prescription for how it must change—politically as well as economically—if it is to survive and prosper.
Richard Longworth is a senior fellow at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, following his positions as director of The Chicago Council’s Global Chicago Center and a twenty-year career in journalism as a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and United Press International. He was the Tribune’s chief European correspondent and reported from 75 countries on five continents. Longworth earned his B.A. from Northwestern University.
Caught in the Middle: America’s Heartland in the Age of Globalism will be available for purchase and signing following the program.
