FILM SCREENING: HBO DOCUMENTARY FILMS—SERGIO

Greg Barker, Director and Producer, Sergio; Bill Von Zehle, Master Sergeant, United States Army; Moderated by Douglass Cassel, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Civil and Human Rights, University of Notre Dame

SergioJoin The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and HBO for a film screening and discussion of the new HBO documentary, Sergio, based on Samantha Power’s biography of Sergio Vieira de Mello. Described by many as the United Nations' go-to guy—a cross between James Bond and Bobby Kennedy—de Mello could descend into the most dangerous places, charm the worst war criminals, and somehow protect the lives of the ordinary people to whom he had devoted his life.

Persuaded by Kofi Annan, Condoleezza Rice, and Tony Blair, de Mello reluctantly took up the post as the United Nations special representative to Iraq in May of 2003. On August 19, 2003, a truck bomb struck the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad killing twenty-two people, including de Mello, and wounding over one hundred. Sergio was a Sundance Film Festival selection, earning the U.S. Documentary Editing Award. It will make its HBO television premiere on May 6.  Following the screening, a discussion and question and answer session will take place with film director and producer Greg Barker.

Greg Barker, a former war correspondent, draws on his years of experience filming and working in more than fifty countries across six continents. His films include the award-winning Ghosts of Rwanda and several other investigative films for the flagship PBS series Frontline. The film Sergio is his first feature documentary.
