As longstanding allies, the United States and the Netherlands have a track record of cooperation that continues into the present day. From joint efforts to counter attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea to reinforcing NATO’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression to a robust trade partnership, the US and the Netherlands work together to address global challenges and foster mutual prosperity. At the same time, both countries currently face a degree of political uncertainty, with US presidential elections looming and the Dutch parliament struggling to form a ruling coalition.

Birgitta Tazelaar is the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United States and the non-resident Ambassador to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. A career diplomat with 30 years of experience in political affairs, human rights, and development cooperation, Tazelaar previously served as Deputy Director-General for International Cooperation at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Council expert Fay Hartog-Levin
Fay Hartog-Levin is a distinguished fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, with expertise in global water, policy & politics, and Europe. From 2009-2011, she was the 65th ambassador of the United States of America to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In that capacity, she was chief of mission of an embassy which included 15 federal agencies, 4 locations, and over 250 employees.
